Adding a Disconnect Day to Your Schedule

Consider this, we take time every single day to recharge our precious pieces of technology but rarely do we consider recharging ourselves.

Dings, pings, clicks, and rings… it seems to never end. And, if you’re anything like us – sometimes a long day of work and screen time can be polished off with an evening at the movies or watching your favorite series – with the phone within an arms reach. We’re always ‘on.’

When you love what you do, it can be hard to truly disconnect! It can be a blessing and a curse that 24 hours a day we have access to contacting our co-workers, employers, friends, and relatives. It’s all too easy to shoot off a quick email at 10pm before you forget your epiphany for tomorrow’s big meeting – but, there has to be balance.

Have you tried adding a ‘disconnect day” to your schedule? Whether it’s weekly, bi-weekly, or at the very least once a month, having a day that you’re truly disconnected from your electronics can refresh your perspective and make it even more enjoyable returning to work the next day. Implementing a disconnect day at first, admittedly, can seem daunting. No one wants to miss out on that important email chain or opportunity. In fact, one could say a certain degree of “digital FOMO” keeps professionals motivated to strive to do better every day. But, when you let your fear of missing out negatively impact your health and relationships – it’s time to unplug.

Does your office have a disconnect policy? How often do you try to get away from the instant gratification of checking your inbox? Let us know in the comments below if you have any tips for balancing your love of tech with some time off.
